Taraneh Hemami: Bulletin: A Theory of Survivability Project

3rd Floor Gallery

"If remembering is always a subjective act then it is also always a political act, for the selectivity of memory (including that which is forgotten) can be understood as an individual, unpredictable response to multiple relations of power." (Manijeh Nasrabadi)

How does history shape our lives? Which histories--personal, political, familial, cultural--connect us, and which divide?

Bulletin is stunningly researched, vivid publication from artist Taraneh Hemami. This Theory of Survival publication, is produced as the culmination of Hemami’s residency with The Arts at CIIS (California Institute of Integral Studies), and made possible by the generous support of CalHumanities. Bulletin includes essays by two extraordinary Bay Area scholars, Manijeh Nasrabadi and Christian Frock.

Theory of Survival projects engage with a historical archive belonging to the library of the Iranian Students Association of Northern California (1964-1982), recently acquired by the Library of Congress (2009).

Theory of Survival: Fabrications, a Creative Capital project, was additionally funded by Center for Cultural Innovation, San Francisco Arts Commission, California College of the Arts, and Southern Exposure.
